B.Y.O. Powder of Life: RETURN TO OZ Art Show

Gallery Meltdown, the finest art gallery in the back of a comic book store in the Los Angeles area, presents Night of the Nick-Nacks, beginning Saturday, February 27 and running through March 23.

A gallery show of adventure and magic, the art featured in Night of the Nick-Nacks is based upon Walter Murch's 1985 film Return to Oz and its source material, the L. Frank Baum books Ozma of Oz and The Marvelous Land of Oz. Dozens of great artists have been assembled for the show... and yours truly has also contributed a painting.

The lovely piece by Delphia pictured on the flyer above is based in illustrative fashion on the movie scene that gives the show its title, but Night of the Nick-Nacks flies out in many wild directions. Whatever one's opinions of Murch and Disney Corp.'s decapitation-fixated nightmare-fuel movie, the pieces I've seen thus far should make for a show that is interesting as film criticism as much as it is nostalgia trip for children of the '80s.

Gallery Meltdown is located in the womb of beloved L.A. institution Meltdown Comics, at 7522 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90046. Opening reception begins is 6 — 10 P.M.

We watched Return to Oz for me and my friend's Halloween party last year.

I will be heading there this week to check things out and hopefully come home with some great art. I love Meltdown. They are what Golden Apple wishes it were. Return To Oz is one of my favorite films from childhood (the others being 3 O'Clock High and Lost Boys). I need some Tick Tock and Wheelers in my life!
